Let Sabrina Ionescu Be An Example...

It’s been almost 3 weeks since University of Oregon basketball player Sabrina Ionescu broke Division I college basketball records during her game at Stanford. After attending, and speaking, at Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s memorial service in Los Angeles, Ionescu competed against the Stanford women's basketball team and became the first Division I player, male or female, to have over 2000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 1000 assists. Let Sabrina be an example.

On this day, Ionescu got a lot of publicity about her record breaking stats and received immense congratulations from the entire athletic community. Thus, she set the tone for the young girls watching; finally they got to see a female basketball player being praised nationally for doing something that a male collegiate player has yet to achieve. And that’s just a fact. Her work ethic, dedication, and mamba mentality does not go unnoticed, and it is important to show young girls everywhere that there is a female basketball player out there doing the impossible. Let Sabrina be an example.

Throughout the month of March, organizations and individuals everywhere are celebrating women's history month. In the sports world, that might mean commemorating the trailblazers for female athletics such as Billie Jean King, Simone Biles, Serena Williams, Dara Torres, Becky Hammon, and many more. Now we can add Sabrina Ionescu to that list. Celebrating these women is so important as we could not do what we do without them. But we also should start praising the current players who have made colossal achievements in their sport. Let’s not wait until they are history to acknowledge their victories. Let Sabrina be an example.

Let Sabrina be an example. Let her light shine on the other girls who live in the shadow of male athletics. Let this very same light inspire more girls to participate in sports, despite the gender stereotypes. Let Sabrina be an example that the female athletes can set the records, not always the males. She can be a role model to all the young girls out there that the impossible is possible, that you can break collegiate records. Let Sabrina be an example.
